Virgin Gorda
Virgin Gorda, with a population of about 2500 and a total area of 21 square kilometers, is the second largest of the British Virgin Islands after the capital, Tortola. Visitors are immediately struck by the beauty, hospitality, and peace of the island. There are some 20 beaches and excellent snorkeling locations on Virgin Gorda. The island is known for the beauty of its white sand beaches often framed by huge boulders. With the exception of the famous Baths, the beaches are seldom crowded. Available activities include sailing, windsurfing, diving, deep sea fishing, tennis, riding, and dancing under the stars to a steel band. A variety of restaurants is available for dining out. There are several small shopping areas where food and supplies can be purchased. Snorkeling equipment and other water sports equipment can be rented. |
The British Virgin Islands
The British Virgin Islands comprise nearly 30 islands and islets, 16 of which are inhabited. They lie 96 kilometers east of Puerto Rico and are in close proximity to the US Virgin Islands. Most of the BVI are grouped around Sir Francis Drake Channel, the historic seaway and famous sailing area. The islands are a British territory. It is essential to bring proof of citizenship: a passport or original birth certificate. Your driver's license is also required in order to secure a BVI local license. Driving is on the left. Credit cards and travelers checks are readily accepted. The U.S. dollar is the local currency. The islands are constantly cooled by trade winds. The balmy and subtropical climate is almost perfect. It rarely rains, usually in brief passing showers. Daytime temperatures normally range between 80° and 90° year around. The morning sunrise and evening sunsets from our decks are spectacular. The night skies are full of stars. |
Getting There
It is important to book transportation early. Travel to Virgin Gorda via Puerto Rico or St. Thomas and then connect with a regional flight to Virgin Gorda or the nearby island of Tortola. Virgin Gorda may be reached by direct ferry three days each week from St. Thomas and several times daily from Tortola. Many good travel agencies are familiar with the island. If booking travel yourself, we recommend checking at least two travel search engines for various options through both San Juan and St. Thomas as fares can vary widely with seasonal sales and specials. Those planning to use frequent flier programs should book 9 months in advance to help ensure desired dates. |
